Single and Parenting

Single parenting…. None of us start off thinking this will ever happen to us.  It isn’t a goal that we aim for when we are growing up. It’s kind of like quicksand. All of a sudden you are in the middle of the pit and sinking fast!

I have always had admiration for single moms. It was amazing to me how they did it, kept body, soul, and their children together.  When my friend Lynne went through her divorce, she was devastated both emotionally and financially.  We helped her as much as we could, even helping her pay the rent and groceries.  When I found myself in similar straights 18 months later, I actually apologized to her. I had absolutely NO idea how difficult it was to be in the situation I found myself in as a single mom, and I would have done more for her if I had really understood.   Here I was in need of an “emotional ICU”, and yet I had to be the healer and provider for my children and somehow figure out how to get our lives back in order all at the same time! And, lest you dads think I am not giving you due credit, I have come to appreciate the different but still challenging situations you find yourselves in as single dads.

I have learned many things during my journey of single parenting. I sometimes think there isn’t much I haven’t experienced as a single parent (if you knew my testimony, you might agree with me). The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t take the journey alone.  You need others, friends, to walk with you. This is why I feel so compelled to co-teach the Single and Parenting class at Christ Church Nashville.  God’s faithfulness has brought my children and me through so many things, painful though they were.  I truly believe all this is for a purpose – to share those experiences, and the wisdom gained from them, with others.

I hope you will join James Whitfield and I on Wednesday nights this fall for the next semester of Single and Parenting.  We look forward to this journey with you!

Class begins Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30pm in the Boardroom at Christ Church.
