Scotland Missions Trip

In June of 2012 a team of eleven embarked on a life-changing trip to Dumbarton, Scotland to serve the ministry of Overtoun House, a Christian Center for Hope and Healing. This beautiful estate was leased to missionaries Bob and Melissa Hill by the West Dunbartonshire Council in 2001, and has since received teams from around the globe to renovate the house and grounds for Kingdom use. The Grace Wing will provide housing and care for young women in crisis as they learn to get back on their feet and live healthy, healed and blessed lives. The grounds are used in a variety of ways for outreach to the local community and its youth. To support these efforts the house offers a Bed and Breakfast with gorgeous accommodations, stunning views of the property, and excellent food provided by the Tea Room. His Family Church, pastored by Bob and Melissa, meets in the Tea Room for Sunday worship as well as in small groups during the week. Much of the prayer and work of Overtoun House is accomplished by this small community of believers.

The team from Christ Church hit the ground running. Although the house is beautiful, there is still plenty of work to be done. Over the course of the week the team partnered with the house staff to lay hardwood floor, shore up and rebuild old stone walls, repair plumbing, install toilets, provide various carpentry skills and craft custom molding, install electrical wiring, declutter the basement and grounds, mow and tend the enormous property, haul firewood, clean the near complete B&B rooms, and finish a variety of other odd jobs as needed. Besides the physical labor, the team was invited into the work of the local church, connecting with the people and engaging in community. Members of the team spoke during the Sunday morning services and prayed with the church, led devotions and discussions in small groups during the week, taught children’s church and even went to the local schools to visit and play with the kids. The team agrees, however, that they were the ones who received the most from the warm and gregarious nature of the folks at Overtoun House and His Family Church.

Some of the greatest spiritual transformation happened within the team itself. The team cooked and shared meals with the entire house, shared morning devotions, hiked the surrounding estate and up onto the craggs overlooking the stunning landscape, and spent evenings around the fireplace talking. These times of bonding and fellowship built connections with the missionaries and their families and between team members who testify that their walk with the Lord was deepened as a result of this trip. The challenges and rewards of the trip have somehow formed a particular blessing in the hearts of those who went, some of whom cannot wait to go back, believing Overtoun House to be a seed-bed for what God has in store for the people of the Land of Highlands and Islands.

The team will be making a presentation of the trip, including photographs, video, and testimonies on Sunday, July 29 at 6pm in Wallace Chapel.
