Who May Ascend

Psalm 24

, July 15, 2018

The 24th Psalm asks the question, “Who May Ascend?” It is a fundamental question of human life politically, socially, and economically. In the world, the ones who ascend are the people who grasp for power. The games we play are thus about gaining power, holding on to power, or keeping people away from power. If we want to ascend the hill of the Lord however, the kind of power we need is a quality called righteousness. For the Lord tells us we must have clean hands, that we must have a heart that does not lift itself up to vanity. Fortunately, righteousness is available to everyone who asks for it. Unfortunately, we rarely ask for it until we experience powerlessness of some sort. That is why the hymns and songs that endure through the generations are often those birthed in trial.
