Lead Kindly Light

Isaiah 9:1-7

, December 2, 2018

The Book of Genesis tells us that the Lord created the moon and stars before he made the sun. The story line is consistent with the Hebrew idea that a new day begins in darkness. Matthew’s Gospel draws on Isaiah’s prophesy about how “those who sat in darkness have seen a great light,’ to begin the story of Jesus. The people of Galilee were in poverty and oppression, but the arrival of Jesus to their towns was the beginning of their deliverance.

Our own story of walking out of darkness begins the same way. We walk toward the sometimes tiny, flickering lights that appear in what is still a dark situation. Like the Magi, we flow that light until we arrive at our new day.
