Drug Uses
Lipitor is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) for reducing the quantity of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. Accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the walls of your arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and, as a result, decreases the oxygen supply to your heart, brain, and other parts of your body. Lowering your blood level of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina (Chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.
How Taken
Lipitor comes as a tablet to take in orally. It is generally taken once a day with or without a meal. It is recommended to take Lipitor at about the same time daily. Your doctor may prescribe you a lower dosage to start with and then gradually increase the dosage. Don't stop taking Lipitor without your physician`s approval, even if you feel better. You should have a low cholesterol and low fat diet while taking this drug.
More Information
During curing with Lipitor, alcohol should be taken only in moderate doses. Taking alcohol and Lipitor at the same time may increase the risk of liver damage. Don't take grapefruit juice with Lipitor–they may interact, which can lead to potentially unsafe side effects. Discuss the use of alcohol, grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your physician. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your food allowance without first contacting with your doctor.
